I'm pretty happy with my nikon d60, not too expensive and you can take as good photo's as with the d90 with some skill.

Save your money for GOOD GLASS, like Nikon or Canon, depending on what you have. They will take you further than a good body with mediocre glass, and they hold/or go up in value. As the retail/new price of a given Nikon/Canon lens goes up, as will it's used counterpart.

I totally agree that glass is a good investment, if you're really into it. If you're still testing the waters though, don't go overboard with it. And glass value is not limited to canon and nikon

I always liked my rebels, although they can be a bit small. For that reason, I recommend semi-pro bodies. For Canon, that's the xxD bodies like the 20D, 30D, 40D, etc. I've been shooting with a 5D for almost the past year and I don't think I could go back.

I got a rebel xt (350D) and like it a lot. Your best bet is to get something inexpensive, learn how to use it and get good lenses like mentioned above.

Something my teacher told me is that it is not the camera that takes good pictures, it is the person behind the lens.

also remember that the d3000 is the new version of the d60.

if you are looking at dslr's and want to save a few dollars, get a lower end body (Ie canon rebel xsi or something like that), but don't skimp on your lenses. Invest into the lenses because if you want to sell them you will be able to get almost all your money back, and the quality of the picture isn't really in the body (unless your comparing full-frame and 1.3), it's almost all in the glass.

I shoot with a Canon 30d which I like, but it can be a bit heavy sometimes. Lenses I have are not "L" lenses but Sigma, which I somewhat-sort-of-not-really-but-maybe regret.

If you are looking for a point-and-shoot, try Sony or Canon's top of the line point and shoot cameras, you can't really go wrong. A point and shoot is exactly what its for, point and shoot.

Also remember to use google as this particular thread has been gone over thousands of times of thousands of forums I'm sure.

And go to a store and play with shit to see which you like best. Can't go wrong, really. It's a tool, and they are all good enough (if not great) especially for a beginner.

Try and find yourself a d40 or d40x... then spend the savings on a good lense, a tripod and a flash...

And actually get out and use it a ton. And maybe read a bit about photography other than just lens specs.

Otherwise you'll just take pictures of your car next to trash and think it looks cool.
